Julia Garner is a Licensed Professional Counselor who comes to Stokes Counseling with twenty plus years of direct care in the mental health field. She has worked in residential facilities, group homes, partial hospitalization programs and providing outpatient services. She has spent the last six years providing therapeutic services to individuals and families in the in-home setting and wished to continue engaging families in the home as she feels it is a more personal and effective setting for successful therapy. Her overall approach is strengths based to focus on skills each person and family already has a build on those in a positive collaborative manner. She has experience working with foster families to support building those relationships addressing the issues the children bring to the home from past experiences with their biological families that lead them to be placed in the system. Julia specializes in trauma therapy having been trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, specifically how to implement it in the home. She has an extensive background working with children and adolescents who are struggling with suicidal and/or self injurious behaviors. Julia is also experienced working with he LGBTQ community. She has worked in Los Angeles, Ca and Springfield Ma, allowing her to be adept at working with many different cultures. Julia can maintain collaboration with schools, DCF and Courts to best support and advocate for your families to get their needs met. Finally, she is skilled at assessing clients level of functioning coming to you with different treatment modalities that match a client’s cognitive and emotional level of development.
